Rockwell Center Fellowships

The Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, is a national research institute dedicated to advance scholarship in American illustration art. The Rockwell Center brings new scholarly attention and resources to the study of American illustration art and visual studies.  The Rockwell Center awards annual fellowships promoting the scholarly study of American illustration art to advance understanding of the role of published images in shaping and reflecting American culture.

The Rockwell Center Fellowship is open to senior scholars and museum professionals choosing to pursue research or projects in or relating to the subject field of American illustration art and visual studies.

Fellowship Details
This fellowship may be used only during the year for which it is awarded. Recipients who have already received one of these fellowships may not apply for another until three years have elapsed. The term of these grants may be carried out is residence at the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Fellow’s home institution, or at another appropriate site.

  • Stipend: $500/week for up to three weeks
  • Time of fellowship: May 2011 through April 2012
  • Housing not included
  • Upon conpletion of the fellowship the fellow will be expected to give a public lecture at the Norman Rockwell Museum and to provide a copy of their finished research and its subsequent publication for the Museum’s library and archives.
  • The Norman Rockwell Museum reserves the right to consider publishing material created from a Rockwell Center Fellowship.
  • Eligibility -applicants must:

    • Offer a proposal for scholarly research about or relating to American illustration art using a visual studies approach.
    • Senior fellowships are intended for scholars with a distinguished publication record who have held the doctoral degree for more than five years or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment at the time of application.
    • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.

  • Images (up to three pages) [optional]

  • Three letters of reference
  • The Rockwell Center Dissertation Fellowship is open to doctoral candidates who are currently working on dissertation research or writing in or related to the field of American illustration art and visual studies.

    Fellowship Details

    This fellowship is a non-renewable award, and may be carried out in residence at the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Fellow’s home institution, or at another appropriate site. The fellowship may not be used to defray tuition costs or be hold conccurrently with any other fellowship or grant.

    • Stipend: $500 /week for up to three weeks
    • Time of fellowship: May 2011 to April 2012
    • Housing not included
    • An unbound copy of the completed dissertation will be placed in the Norman Rockwel Museum’s library and archives.

    Eligibility – applicants must:

    • Have completed all requirements for the Ph. D. except the disseration before beginning the fellowship tenure.
    • Be a Ph. D. candidate in a department of art history, American studies, cultural studies, or visual studies of the United States.
    • Have a dissertation focused on or relating to a topic about American illustration art or referencing published images. Although the topic may be historically grounded, attention to the art object and/or image should be foremost. Projects must be object-oriented and use art-historical or visual studies approaches.

    • Three letters of reference, including one from a dissertation advisor

    Notification of a fellowship award will be sent in early March 2011.
