Supporting Research
The Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies will support research in the field of illustration and visual studies. Scholars will be invited to apply to be Rockwell Scholars. Working with art, library and studio collections at illustration collections and museums nationwide, scholars will study the relationship of illustration art to popular culture, social history, mass media, formal art history and other disciplines. Research fields include: American illustration (1850-present,) Norman Rockwell, mass media studies, communications, popular culture, and design, animation and American culture studies.
To these ends, the Rockwell Center plans to award fellowships to senior scholars and advanced graduate students working in the field of American visual studies.
The Association of Research Institutions in Art History, ARIAH, was organized in 1988 to promote scholarship by institutes of advanced research in the history of art and related disciplines; to provide general information about the scholarly activities of its member institutes; and to develop cooperative projects and programs. It currently consists of 21 member institutions. ARIAH is committed to seeking new initiatives that will promote art historical research throughout the world, and encourage interchange and collaboration among research centers internationally. The Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies would aim to join this prestigious group of museums with research institutes in art history to promote study and scholarship in American illustration.
